Checking your POP with Outlook Express

In order to set up your Outlook Express program to check your POP account, you will need some basic information. After your account was set up, DaySite sent you an email with some details, which includes:

  • Your Domain Name
  • Your new Email Address
  • User name
  • Password
  • POP3 and SMTP server Names

Note: Your 'User Name' is also the first part of your email address.

If Your User Name is: bigboss
Your Email Address Is: bigboss@mydomain.com

For puropses of this example, please assume the following settings:

Domain Name:mydomain.com
User Name:bigboss
Email Address:bigboss@mydomain.com
Password:mypassword
POP3 Server:mydomain.com
SMTP Server:mydomain.com

Note: The POP3 and SMTP server names are your domain name.

Setting Up Your Email Program

Outlook Express

SUMMARY

To configure Outlook Express to read Internet mail, follow these steps:

  1. In Outlook Express, click Tools | Accounts | Mail. You may already have one, or more lines of information, pertaining to existing POP account(s). Leave these alone. What we want to do is configure a new set of instructions so Outlook Express ALSO checks your email in the new POP account we just created for you on the DaySite server. (You can stop rolling your eyes now, and no white knuckles please.)
  2. To the right, click Add, and then click Mail.
  3. The Internet Connection Wizard window asks for a name. Type the name you want others to see when you send a message, and then click Next. i.e.: John Jones or XYZ Corp. (no WWW or other computer stuff needed here)
  4. In the E-mail Address box, type the e-mail address created for you at DaySite
(i.e.: "bigboss@mydomain.com"), and then click Next.
  5. Under E-mail Server Names, select POP3 as the Incoming Mail Server type, and in the next two boxes, Incoming and Outgoing mail servers, type: mydomain.com
  6. Type bigboss in the POP account name box, and mypassword in the password box.
  7. Click the Log on using radio button so that a dot appears in its center. Click next.
  8. In the Internet Mail Account Name box, type a name to identify the mail account you are configuring. This is known as the "friendly" name for the account. (i.e. XYZ Mail Server) Click Next.
  9. If your version of Outlook Express has a "Connect using my local area network (LAN)" radio button, then click it, then click Next.

Click Finish.

and... your are done!

Ok. the above was for using the Wizard. Now if you need to change or try different settings, here is the quick way:

  1. TOOLS | ACCOUNTS | MAIL select the account you want to modify

  2. PROPERTIES in Mail account type something like Your Co Mail Server

  3. In Name: Your Personal Name,

  4. In Organization: Your Co Name

  5. In E-mail: bigboss@mydomain.com

  6. SERVERS | Outgoing mail (SMTP) mydomain

  7. Incoming mail (POP3): mydomain

  8. Account name: bigboss

  9. Password: mypassword

Note: While there are other buttons and fields, unless you know what you are doing, leave them alone. Of course you are free to experiment, but you are on your own. :)
